Tiger & Turtle – Magic Mountain is a large‑scale art installation and landmark in Duisburg, Germany, which has become one of the city’s most photographed contemporary attractions. Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth designed the work, and it was officially opened in November 2011 on the Heinrich‑ Hildebrand‑Höhe, a former slag heap in Angerpark. The installation originated from a competition tied to RUHR.2010 – European Capital of Culture.

Resembling a roller coaster but fully walkable, Tiger & Turtle allows visitors to climb about 220 meters of staircases and 349 steps. The vertical loop is blocked for safety. Its steel and zinc construction references Duisburg’s industrial history, linking the sculpture to the region’s past.

The construction cost around 2 million euros, funded by public and private sources. Open 24 hours a day and free, it is widely visited by locals and tourists alike. At night, 880 LED lights highlight its curves, producing a striking effect visible from afar, contributing to its popularity online and on social media.

Tiger & Turtle combines sculpture, walkway, and viewpoint, offering visitors a physical experience of its unusual form, panoramic views, and dramatic evening illumination, while reflecting Duisburg’s transformation from industrial site to cultural landscape.
