The extension of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is officially called the Exhibition Road Quarter and was completed in 2017. It was designed by the London-based architecture firm AL_A, led by Amanda Levete.

The main aim of the project was to open the museum more directly to the city while adding substantial new exhibition space without disrupting the historic fabric of the building. At its center is a publicly accessible courtyard, finished with distinctive porcelain tiles, which functions both as an urban gathering space and as a new entrance from Exhibition Road. Beneath this courtyard lies a large, column-free underground gallery designed for flexible use.

In this way, the project combines several functions: it improves access, significantly expands exhibition capacity, and creates a new public space within the city. Architecturally, it is defined by the integration of plaza, entrance, and hidden exhibition hall – an approach that respects the historic context while introducing a clearly contemporary intervention.
